Gary Aasen, Coach

Gary Aasen has been the coach of the Edina Boys Tennis team for 25 years. In that time his teams have a combined match record of 407 wins to 105 losses, with only one losing season. His coaching has produced 15 Lake Conference team titles, 15 Regional team titles and 8 AA State team titles, including back-to-back titles in 2002 and 2003.

Gary is the Director of tennis at the Minikhada Club, a tennis pro at Lifetime Fitness and a Level 3 certified ski instructor. Gary, his wide Barb Brill and their son, Andy live in South Minneapolis.

Maggi Agustsson Bookey, Class of 1994

Maggi was the Athena winner for the Class of 1994, earning a total of 8 varsity letters, 4 letters in both tennis and Alpine skiing and one in track. Maggie was a member of four state tournament championship teams, three in tennis and one in Alpine. Maggi was also team captain of both the tennis and ski teams her senior year. Maggi played four years of tennis for Iowa State University, and was named team captain and MVP her senior year.

Maggi is a Client Manager at Right Management in Edina where she lives with her husband Dave, and their three children Tyler, Kyle and Isabelle.

Bob Amis, Class of 1972

Bob Amis played 4 years of Varsity tennis for Edina, advancing to the Singles State Championship 3 of his four years, and winning the singles tournament in 1971. During this time, the Edina Tennis team won the team state tournament twice. After graduating, Bob played tennis for the University of Minnesota where he made the All Big-10 team and was named MVP both his junior and senior years.

Bob retired from business and returned to the classroom where he teaches science at the City of Lake Waldorf School. He and his wife Gretchen live in Minneapolis and frequently see their three children and grandchildren.

Steve Brown, Class of 1979 East

Steve played Varsity soccer and hockey, winning back-to-back State Championships in hockey in 1978 and 1979 and helping the soccer team to a 2nd place finish his junior year. His senior year, Steve was soccer team captain and named to the All-Conference team and in hockey was named to the All-Conference and All-State teams. Steve then played 4 years of hockey at Colorado College and a year on a professional team in Sweden before returning to Edina. 

Steve has volunteerd with the Edina Hockey Association for over 30 years and is also active in Edina local politics. He is currently an Executive Vice President at The Excelsior Group and has two grown daughters, Gabbie and Maddie.

Bill Diercks, Class of 1965

Bill was the lead goal tender on the Edina hockey team from 1963-1965, played baseball and was President of the Student Council. His senior year, Bill was named to the hockey All-Conference, All-State and All-American teams while also graduating as a member of the National Honor Society. Bill attended Harvard College where he played 4 more years of hockey and was in net for Harvard's 3rd place finish in the 1969 NCAA Final Four Division 1 Championships. Bill then got his MBA from Harvard Business School and began a long career in Financial Management and Consulting.

Bill and his wife Laurie live in the Boston area where their four grown children also live. Bill enjoys traveling, hiking, model railroading and flying.

Ty Farley, Class of 1985

Ty earned six varsity letters at Edina High School, two each in football, basketball and track, and in his senior year was voted MVP of both the basketball and track teams. Ty's high jump of 6'9.25" in 1985 remains the highest recorded jump in Edina High School history and is tied for 30th best all-time in Minnesota State High School League competition. Ty attended the University of North Dakota for one year, then joined the military. From 1986 through 2015 Ty served in the United State Marines, the National Guard and the US Army, doing tours during the Gulf War and in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Ty is retired and lives in Kentucky but frequently returns to Minnesota to visit his family and friends.

Marie Moilanen, Coach

Marie is credited as the inspiration, creator, mentor and coach of Adapted Athletics at Edina High School. In the early 1980s, Marie combined her experiences in special education and physical education with her passion for the disabled into the development of competitive adapted team sports for special needs students. She coached several of the teams that went on to win state championships. Today, Edina's adaptive athletes participate in PI (Physically Impaired) Flyers and the CI (Cognitively Impaired) Jets teams, administered through Bloomington Kennedy and Jefferson High Schools, respectively.

Sadly, we lost Marie this past summer after a battle with Pancreatic Cancer. She is survived by her husband, Mike, their two children and two grandchildren. Her passion, energy and boundless love is greatly missed.

Caroline Smith Bailey, Class of 2002

Caroline earned seven varsity letters at Edina, 4 in hockey and 3 in soccer. During her senior soccer season, Caroline was named Metro Player of the Year, Minnesota Gatorade Player of the Year, Minnesota Ms. Soccer, a McDonalds All-American and an NCSAA High School All-American. Caroline went on to play varsity soccer for the University of Kansas where she earned All Big-12, All-Region, and all-American recognition. Her 51 career goals still stand as the all-time KU record.

Caroline received a degree in Medicine from the University of Minnesota and works as an Emergency Physician in the Health East system. Caroline and her husband Justin live in Mendota heights with their two young sons, Grayson and Finnegan.
